The house and its history

The villa was built in 1909 as a summer home for the bank director Mauritz Philipson and his family. It was designed by Ferdinand Boberg, one of the leading Swedish architects of his time, who also designed Rosenbad, the Central Post Office, the Thiel Gallery, Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde and NK in Stockholm.

The house stands on a slope down to the water. Facing the bay it has three floors, facing the entrance two. One gable has a square lookout tower, and an open veranda runs along the façade. The style is classical with touches of Art Nouveau, such as the oval attic windows.

In 1946 the estate was bought by the Diocese of Stockholm and became Graninge diocesan retreat. For almost seventy years it was a meeting place for camps, courses and conferences, and many people remember it from those days.

In 2013 the diocese sold the estate, and the area became Graninge Strand. The restaurant is named after the architect.
